Sustainability for Communities
A sustainable strategic approach to healthy, balanced communities.
Sustainability is about creating the kind of world we want for ourselves, our neighbors and future generations. It involves living our lives and making decisions as individuals, organizations and societies so that the quality of life available to future generations is equal to – or even exceeds – what we inherited from our ancestors.
Communities are complex systems that comprise a variety of diversity of stakeholders and interests and deliver a multitude of goods and services. The community level is also where people are most connected, where impacts are often felt first and where major infrastructure decisions are made that shape our day-to-day lives.
As a society, we have the knowledge, tools and resources we need to create sustainable communities. But a framework is needed to map the way to sustainability.
During the four sessions of the Integrated Community Sustainability Planning, participants will develop their framework by:
- learning the four sustainability principles which will provide a common language & understanding of sustainability in your community
- learning the four steps to developing your initial sustainability goals
- identifying key areas for improvement
- clearly defining community goals
- creating an action plan using The Natural Step system
The Natural Step is a dynamic framework that builds the capacity of leaders and change agents to transform their organizations and lead their communities toward sustainability.
