Wal-Mart says it will preach environmental message

Wal-MartFeb. 2 -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has launched an initiative that will spread its environmental message outside of the company to its suppliers, communities and customers.

Lee Scott, president and CEO of the Bentonville, Ark.-based mega-retailer, unveiled the company´s Sustainability 360 plan Feb. 1 during a keynote address at the Prince of Wales´ Business and the Environment Program in London.

An example of the projects Wal-Mart plans to undertake will be challenging the retailer´s associates and suppliers to figure out how to remove nonrenewable energy from the products Wal-Mart sells. The company also will reach out to communities and customers to promote sustainable and environmentally preferable practices.

"And we believe every business can look at sustainability in this way," Scott said. "In fact, in light of current environmental trends, we believe they will and soon."
